The Solistice

Yesterday I was surprised by the change
in the familiar streets
walls that were dull a week ago
are now full of colour.

My troubled thoughts interrupted by the sweetest aroma
As I looked up a sight that is a gift to the eyes
An Apple tree covered in pink flowers
Seems to be mocking my worries.

Every other fence and even some trees
embellished by glissinas
impossible blue in triangular clusters
with delicate sweetness to match.

There is electricity in the air
as Winter fusses with expectation
to welcome Cousin Spring
in September 21st: the SOLSTICE.

As I walk out of my room
I struggle to recognize the garden
A full corner is taken
by half a sphere covered in red flowers.

The rare walk in the garden made more special
by the unusual sight of a moving flower:
A beautiful bird, the brightest yellow I’ve ever seen
contrasting the light green of new foliage.

Further back the Lavender fusses with a few early flowers
While every shrub is full of buds each one a hope for the future.
A wall covered in flowers brings the smell of jasmine
carrying the promise of great tea
while competing with the smell of 'Yesterday Today and Tomorrow'.

There is electricity in the air
as Winter fusses with expectation
to welcome Cousin Spring
in September 21st: the SOLSTICE.

The tiny piece of sky I get to see
from the small window in my room
shows me the sky is now
an even deeper hue of blue.

While the few rays of sunlight
now in a new pattern
indicating the shift of the planet
are not only warmer but even more golden if possible.

I give in to the excitement around me
as Nature is slowly shedding its slumber.
The hidden promise in every bud confirming
something more basic: Our love for life.

There is electricity in the air
as Winter fusses with expectation
to welcome Cousin Spring
in September 21st: the SOLSTICE.
