WILL HUMANITY SURVIVE?

The health of our genes will determine the chances that the international human community have of having a future. 

The statistics that were able to attract public attention to this problem are certainly somber - eight out of every ten persons have some form of genetic problems (i.e. retardation, Dawn Syndrome, Cretinism, etc.)  These numbers are a reflection of the global situation, even though, further investigations exposed different proportions in different areas of the planet, it could still be confirmed that the overall percentage remained unchanged. 

In September 2016, I wrote a brief entry in Facebook in this regard, that proved extremely popular and resulted in several enquirers and comments.  As it is, I have been discussing that entry (that I called 'Leviticus') regularly since then, and has even resulted in an increase in Bible sales!!  So, leading to the present contribution, I decided to blog it in order to facilitate referrals:

 The above mentioned contribution underlined the social causes of this problem - causes that could and should be controlled by all of us, both as individuals and as communities.

Another twist in this tale, is the genetic differences introduced by the different ethnicities.  Recently I was struggling to explain this perspective to someone, and a third party volunteered the fact that Adam and Eve managed to conceived over a hundred descendants each, even though they were the only humans in the planet at the time (Genesis in the Old Testament of the Bible).  Of course the human genome is rich and versatile! 

A strategy that I consider important, and would like to promote, is the requirement of genetic tests as part of the process towards obtaining a marriage license.  In many parts of the planet, the requirement of a basic medical exam towards obtaining a marriage license is routine.  That medical exam should include genetic testing. 

As a matter of fact, the genetic test should be undertaken as soon as there is an intention towards marriage between two families.  This simple procedure can be accomplished with one drop of saliva from the bride and groom to be, and it takes 5 minutes to get an outcome.  One drop of saliva could make available to the families involved the information they need to decided whether to proceed towards marriage or not.  One drop of saliva that would make available critical information as it pertains to maintaining and improving the genetic health of that family, and related communities. 

A simple drop of saliva could change a decision that is presently being undertaken by chance, into an informed decision that would start re-shaping our future.  Take a moment to consider our chances, eight out of every ten persons have problems with the health of their genes, a situation that cries to be assessed and controlled.  Our future depends on it... 

THE HEALTH OF OUR GENES WILL DICTATE OUR FUTURE

Yes, the health of our genes will certainly dictate our future. A few weeks ago I published an entry with a reference to LEVITICUS; and got some interesting feedbacks: i.e. ‘Where do we find it?’   

Leviticus is part of the Old Testament and can be found in the BIBLE.   Leviticus 18 refers to the section in question.   A few days before I published that entry, I was told the latest research indicates that 8 out of 10 people have genetics disfunctionalities.  I went back to the entry in the Bible and wondered – why has it taken us this long to act on this?   

I did some research in the Internet and even though Leviticus deals with happenings that took place during the times of Moses, and refers to events that took place during the Exodus (+/- 1446 BC), it would have been written during the 6th century.  Apparently among much uncertainty, scholars do agree that the book had a long period of growth, while including material of antiquity.  I would have hoped by now most communities had developed a healthy interest in the genetic health of their people; and yet the numbers are unsettling.  

UNHEALTHY GENES  are due to behavior that can be prevented and avoided once the information is made available: 

Sexuallly Transmitted Diseases or STD will result in unhealthy genes for your children and grandchildren (i.e. AIDS; Syphillis, Gonorrea, etc.)   Promiscuity and rape are chiefly responsible for spreading them. 

IN-BREEDING – this refers to small communities where people have children with their cousins and other relatives. 

CHEWING the foetoes – It sounds barbaric, but some communities use this practice to have multiple babies from one conception. 

SODOMY – it causes genetic damage that results in dwarf children. 

Using ALCOHOL & DRUGS.  I do not think I need to elaborate…

Worst than Rape

A few weeks ago I came across some pamphlets protesting the practice of impregnating women against their will for the purpose of taking their children.  I thought: 'this indeed is worst than rape!' 

Much has been said on the topic of reproductive rights: the issue is generally linked to that of 'human rights' - it affects even those in jail (with a smaller set), and has been extensively covered in actuality programs and gender publications.  Traditionally the angle tends to be the issue of abortion - is the giving or taking of a life a choice to be made?  The matter of quality comes to the surface, and poverty is often a determining factor when a family makes the decision of denying life to one of its members.  It does not matter how much some try to trivialize this issue, there is a saddness to it. 

But the issue of reproductive rights should not be restricted to abortion lobbies, pro's or con's.  Reproductive rights also include the many women that never get to meet their children because they are kidnapped at birth, or even as early as they become viable embryos; sometimes by the in-laws, sometimes by employers, or even un-ethical medical personnel gathering subjects for medical experiments. 

It does not really matter how it gets to happen, the outcome is the same.  A woman, a mother, that knows her children are out there, but never gets to meet them.  Someone that wonders every day whether it is a birthday, or the start of a special school term, and can not be there to see the child off.  Celebrating one more Christmas surrounded by mobs of parents trying to beat each other off the last 'Barbie' doll, or the latest model of robot; while wondering what her child would like - and whether they will find it in the Christmas tree.  A mother wondering if her children are being treated well, or abused; when common sense indicates denying a child access to his or her own mother, is itself abusive. 

I remember my joy when reading the International Rights of Children, in finding access to their parents clearly listed!  And wishing that each of the rights itemized could be a reality for each and every child...  After all, these rights are just a reflection of the wishes of the communities that were involved in their compilation.

And most enlightened nations in the world acknowledge and recognize the rights of women regarding their children; why is it then, than in practice, so many mothers end-up empty handed?  I have come across so many women in this situation, some of them robbed of the precious gift of their own children against their will.  Some young women unwilling volunteers towards some real or immaginary benefit to the larger community, and realize there is a need of re-conceptualizing the strategies we use dealing with this problem - those committed to assist are focusing efforts and resources in the symptoms rather than the root causes.

EDUCATING TOWARDS A RAPE-FREE SOCIETY

Not long ago I met this young woman from an old europen nation that has a strong military tradition for both genders. Until recently, their young women were required to endure disfiguering adjustments to their bodies - a procedure aimed at curbing rapes. It was a moving notion, those young 12 year olds making a commitment to being 'less attractive' for the sake of preventing the attracting of the wrong type of attention.
It was not the first time I have come across these type of strategies: young girls, being disfigured to discourage rapists.

We are living in a society that seems to have embraced rape as an unavoidable part of life. It is not.
A society that encourages no-resistance to attacks as a safer alternative: ‘Let the attackers rather rape you that kill you’. Let us face it, there are no warranties – rape is a crime of violence.
I have even come across people claiming rape is used to discourage anti-social behavior in some cultures. Sadly, there are things that cannot be partially discouraged. There are other ways to discipline, ways that do not permeate in the overall community.
There are jobs, professions and organizations that encourage people to consider being raped as part of the job-description, sooner or later unavoidable. And the capacity of dealing with the eventuality as a sign of ‘maturity’. The very way in which people perceive themselves and their bodies is affected!
Where rape is concerned, most structures in place, , deal with the consequences of rape, rather than trying to address its roots. Years ago I attended a workshop of the South Africa Narcotics Organization (SANCA), where participants were encouraged to imagine an ideal future, as far as their jobs in dealing with drug problems was concerned. Some suggested centers where addicts could get the medication required free of charge; others hoped for the financial resources that would enable them to provide counseling to everyone in need of help; and so on, and on. Nobody conceived a drugs free future!! And when suggested, the idea caused major anxiety in people that have worked years towards specializations.
I think it is the same when it comes to rape. People that have specialized in assisting rape victims also need assistance towards moving on, conceptualizing even, the possibility of a rape-free society.
I would like to think of a project, or even an NGO, acknowledging rape as part of the cultures of nations around the world. Researching its roots, and manifestations, and developing educational frameworks to reverse this grotesque learning.
Women have a vital role to play in this regard, as the primary educators in every household.
